Sea lion of New Zealand
With not confusing with the Otary of New Zealand Arctocephalus forsteri . It is rather close to the Sea lion of Australia Neophoca cinerea , and was sometimes regarded as belonging to the same species with this one.
Medium of life
It is limited to the coasts of the Southern island of the New Zealand, with the cold moderate climate. But it does not move away on the open sea and remains at the edge of the coasts.
Conservation
The species is regarded as Vulnérable according to IUCN, with a manpower close to 15000 animals, but fluctuating according to the weather risks (which affect especially the survival of small in low age). The attack which it would carry to mollusc stocks according to the fishermen is the object of frictions between those, the ecologists and the government New Zealand (which authorizes the capture of a hundred heads per annum).
