Scuderia Toro Rosso STR1

STR1 is a single-seater of Formule 1 of the committed stable Toro Rosso during the season 2006, with the hands of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed.

History

First single-seater of the ex-team Minardi, after the repurchase of this one by Dietrich Mateschitz, the tycoon of the energy drink Red Bull, the STR1 represents a change of era. Indeed, its affiliation with the group Red Bull ensures it to profit from important funds, at least sufficient (what was seldom the case in the past), of a technical support and pilots owe their place in the bucket only with their talent and their membership with the Red Bull bosom.

Scott Speed, first American pilot engaged in Grands Prix since Michael Andretti in 1993, corresponds perfectly to this description, since it bound its intended for that of Red Bull since 2002, with as not of organ the third place with the Championship GP2 in 2005. Vitantonio Liuzzi followed a course different but not less exemplary, since he is the last champion of F3000 in 2004, which was worth to him a place of racing driver " in alternance" with Christian Klien at Red Bull Racing in 2005. Unfortunately confrontation did not turn to its advantage and it is the Austrian who preserved the bucket of Red Bull for the season 2006, the Italian failing at Toro Rosso. The team obtained the right to preserve an engine V10 (the Cosworth which propelled Minardi PS05 in 2005, attached with 16700 trs/min then with 17000 trs/min in qualification) during all the season, which did not fail to make squeak some teeth on the side of his/her basic comrade of grid, Midland F1. More especially as the team profited from a transfer of information on behalf of the team-mother Red Bull Racing.

As of the first Grand Prix, the STR1 astonish while being qualified in fifteenth and sixteenth positions, and finishes eleventh and thirteenth, far in front of the Super Aguri and Midland. The couple of V10 is obviously shown finger to explain this transformation of ex-small the poucet plate into stable of medium of grid.

In Malaysia, the STR1 still progress on the grid (twelfth and thirteenth) and in race, testifying to their good health. In Australia, this evolution was definitively devoted, since in race, Liuzzi exceeds with regular the Michael Schumacher on her Ferrari and Scott Speed finishes with the eighth position, in front of the Red Bull Racing RB2 of David Coulthard which it unfortunately exceeded under yellow flag, which is worth to him the withdrawal of its first point. For the first of their two races in residence, Toro Rosso do not shine unfortunately: after a race without history, Liuzzi precedes Speed, fourteenth against fifteenth. At the time of the Grand Prix of Europe, the STR1 do not survive, and even sink. Liuzzi is struck by the Toyota of Ralf Schumacher with the first turn and presses Coulthard. Burst aft wheel, it tries to bring back its single-seater to the stands, leaves to the fault and blocks its car right in the middle of the track, causing the entry of the security car! Speed delivers a solid race, but in back of the pack, the advantage conferred by V10 does not seem any more topicality.

In Spain, the situation is similar, Liuzzi is classified quinizième and Speed gives up. Then the Grand Prix comes from Monaco, test dreaded at the beginning of season by all the adversaries of the stable, which feared that V10 of the STR1 does not propel them to the top of the classification. The least which one can say it is that these fears were not justified: the STR1 do not shine, and cannot benefit from the events of race to rise in the points. In England, the struck single-seaters of the scarlet bull hold their row, that of a stable of medium-bottom of grid, not enough competitive to mark points with the regular one: thirteenth and fifteenth on the grid, Liuzzi and Speed know various fortunes in race: the Italian finishes on the heels of Coulthard when its American team-member gives up in the second round on a fixing.

In Canada, the race of the STR1 is average, the only striking fact is that Speed dominates Liuzzi for one of the only times of the season. In the United States, one week later, only nine cars finish after a pile-up eliminating seven cars from entry at the beginning then incidents of race. Speed, in residence, does not pass the first turn, struck by other single-seaters, while Liuzzi tears off the first point of the history of Toro Rosso after having exceeded Nico Rosberg with the regular one.
