A screencast (also called video Capture of the screen) is a Video recording of a screen of computer accompanied most of the time by a Narration audio. Although the term screencast was defined by Jon Udell in 2004, of the tools allowing to make a video capture of the screen existed already in 1993 such as for example the software Lotus ScreenCam. The principal disadvantages of these old tools were the important size of the files which they produced and their limited enough functionalities. The most recent products manages formats of file of more restricted size like the Flash and have more elaborate functionalities like the follow-up of the pointer of the mouse, and the narration audio.
In the same way that a Capture of screen ( screenshot ) can be seen as a photograph of what the user sees with the screen, the video capture ( screencast ) can be comparable with a film of what the user sees with the screen.
Just like it video, the screencasts are popularized today on Internet and the majority of the editors included/understood the advantage which they can draw.
