A scraping-knife is a short Knife with simple or double edge.

It could be used:

  • like Knife;
  • like a short sword: the Spanish schools of Escrime used it left hand to avoid, thus keeping the sword held in the right hand available for the attack; there are then several types. In artistic Fencing, it can be used defensively like offensively.

Types of scraping-knives of combat:

Certain scraping-knives were used only for the Estoc:

  • Scraping-knife of jet
  • Stylet: a Dagger with blade triangular very fine, designed to produce wounds very deep and thus difficult to cure, appeared in Europe at the 13th century and called tucks in English.
  • Pass-mesh

The scraping-knife was sometimes placed in the boot of certain knights to protect itself if ever it had suddenly fallen from its horse.

External bonds (examples):

  • modern Scraping-knife

  • medieval Scraping-knife
