Scottish parliamentary elections of 2007

The Scottish parliamentary elections of 2007 represent the third general elections for the Scottish Parlement since its re-creation in 1999. The vote proceeded Thursday May 3rd 2007, two days after the tercentenary one of the Acte of union which unified the Scotland and the England in 1707.

He was particularly noticed because of the favorable surveys from which had profited, in the previous months, the Parti national Scot (Scottish National Party) and the project Indépendance which represents a central aspect of its program. The Scottish local elections took place the same day. After important problems with the system of E-voting, one revealed the victory of the Scottish national Party, with a seat moreover than the Workers party.

Unfolding

Jack McConnell, as a Prime Minister, engaged in the election with a mean majority of 5 seats made up of a coalition of deputies of the Workers party and party of the Démocrates liberals. The major questions of the countryside were the health, the education, the reform of the " Council tax ", the Pension S, Union and the independence, and the increase in the powers of the Scottish Parliament. Certain parties also suggested making pass from 16 to 18 years the limiting age to leave the school, and also increasing the minimal age to buy Tabac.

In the morning of the May 4th, the results of the elections were always paralyzed by the main issues known by the new system of e-voting. One finally confirmed in afternoon that the Scottish national Party was gaining it of the election with only one seat in advance. The electoral commission committed itself making investigation into the 100.000 rejected bulletins.

The commentators provide that the Scottish national Party will have to compose with the liberal Democrats if he wants to form a coalition. That poses problem for the Nationalists, since the liberal Democrats affirmed not to intend to support their project of independence and, consequently, the legislation necessary to engage a process chief clerk. One foresees also an alliance with the Greens, which is, like the PNE, a party progressist and freedom fighter.
