Scottish Guard
The Scottish guard is a military body of elite created by Charles VII in 1422 to constitute the personal guard of the French sovereign. It was integrated little by little into the troops of the military household of the king.
History
The origin of the Scottish guard goes back to the year 882, when a quota noble Scot came in France to form the guard of the king Charles III. However, the Scottish guard was formally created only under the reign of Charles VII. Documents attest of its existence in 1425, but one can suppose that it was founded at the end of the years 1410, a long time thus before the creation of the company of the Members of the Swiss Guards which goes up with 1497.Its members, with the number of a hundred, formed the close guard of the king for whom they received broad wages. The Scottish guard was also employed like combat unit. Thus many its members were killed in 1465 with the Bataille of Montlhéry at the sides of the king Louis XI. This sovereign created two other companies of archers of the bodies , but made up they of French. In 1515 François Ier added a fourth company. This body was known under the collective name of bodyguards . At that time, Ire did not count exclusively any more of the Scot in his manpower, but it was always known under the name of Scottish company .
To point out this origin, the Scottish company was often ordered by family members royal of Scotland, in particular at the 17th century the kings Charles Ier and Jacques II. Another recall of the origins: the answer of the guet was the " term; hamir" corresponding to means-Scottish the hhay ham ier (" I am ici").
The specific title of guards Scot designated six soldiers of the Scottish company of the bodyguards chosen to be used as close guard to the king at the time of particular ceremonies such as the sacring or the royal marriage. Their chief carried the title of first man-at-arms of France
Like the other companies of bodyguards, the first company was restored in 1814 under the Restoration, to disappear definitively during the fall of the Bourbons in 1830.
Anecdote
