Biography

Beginnings

After having carried out its beginnings in karting with 10 years, Scott Speed passes to the single-seater in 2001, and becomes champion of US Formulated Russell. The following year, it disputes simultaneously the championships To bore Dodge and of US Star Mazda Series.

It is at the end of season 2002 that its career takes an international turning, when it is selected by the Austrian energy drink mark Red Bull within the framework of the Red Bull Driver Search Program whose objective is to support the accession with Formula 1 of an American pilot. Red Bull sends Scott Speed in England then to dispute there the British championship of Formule 3. But the English adventure turns short for the young Speed, to which the doctors diagnose a serious disease of the intestines, which obliges it to put a premature term at its season. Preserving despite everything the support of Red Bull, it disputes into 2004 the German championships and European of Formule Renault. In spite of persistent preoccupations with a health, Speed is essential in the two championships.

In 2005, Red Bull places Speed in the stable iSport in GP2. Even if it does not gain any victory, the American pilot shows himself very regular and finishes the championship in the third place behind Rosberg and Kovalainen. This same year, it carries out its first turns of wheel Formulates 1 of them, at the wheel of a single-seater (in fact a Jaguar of 2004) of the stable Red Bull Racing. Its services are sufficiently promising to enable him to occupy the role of third pilot at the time of the GP of Canada and the United States, then to take down as from 2006 a wheel of holder within the stable Toro Rosso, the second team of Red Bull Formulates 1 of them, thus making him to it first American pilot evolve/move in F1 since Michael Andretti in 1993.

First season in F1 (2006)

At the wheel of Toro Rosso to engine Cosworth V10, the first season of Speed proves frustrating. Fault of a competitive material, it is comdamné most of the time to fight in back of the pack. It carries out its best performance by registering the point of the eighth place in Australia, before being relegated in ninth position after the race because of a going beyond of its share under yellow flag. At the end of the season, in spite of a meter of points remained to zero, it has all the same satisfaction to have shown a performance level close to that of its Italian fellow-member Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Second season in F1 (2007)

Whereas it seemed acquired that Speed would dispute a second season at Toro Rosso, its employer makes last suspense throughout the winter by not registering it on the provisional list of the volunteers. Gerhard Shepherd, joint owner of the stable, expresses in particular reservations on the professionalism of its pilot. It is only on February 24th, 2007, that is to say less than one month before the beginning of the season, that Toro Rosso confirms its engagement.
In spite of the replacement of the engine V10 Cosworth attached by V8 Ferrari and in spite of the technical reinforcement of Adrian Newey which as an chief technical officer of Red Bull Technology is at the origin of the news Toro Rosso STR2, season 2007 of Scott Speed leaves on the same bases as its season 2006. In addition to average performances (but of a level always comparable with those of Liuzzi), Speed is very often constrained with the abandonment, often because of problems of reliability on its car, but also at the conclusion of accidents. The climate of distrust in its connection within the stable does not cease growing, Gerhard Berger and the director of team Franz Tost not dissimulating their desire to recruit for the following season Sebastien Bourdais (invited to three recoveries with meetings of private tests) and Sebastian Vettel. The tension with its direction reaches its point of organ at the conclusion of the Grand Prix of Europe during which the American leaves to the fault under the rain (like five others pilot) as of the first turns. On its return to the stands, a physical dispute bursts with Franz Tost. The content of this dispute varies according to the sources: Tost simply admits having hustled its pilot with the shoulder, while Speed tells to be struck to him by behind then plated against a wall. A few days later, the July 31st 2007, it is dismissed to be replaced by Sebastian Vettel.

Always profiting from the support of Red Bull, it tries since end 2007 to make rebound its career in the tests of stock car in the United States. It already disputed a test of the championship ARCA RE/MAX Series in Talladega (concluded by a seventh place) and ambitionne a regular presence in the groups of NASCAR Busch Series in 2008.
