Scolopacidae

Of the scolopacidés (or Scolopacidae ) gathers the Bécasse S, Bécassine S, Bécassin S (or Limnodrome S), barge S, Courlis, Maubèche (or Bartramie), knight S, Tournepierre S, Bécasseau X, combatant and Phalarope S.

They are Limicole S of small size to average (from 12 to 66 cm), with the legs which can be short with long according to the species. The nozzle, often long, can be right, bent or slightly turned up. One meets them in all the areas of the world, except the Antarctic; many species nest in the Northern hemisphere and are the large migrating ones. They attend mainly the coasts and the wetlands of the interior of the grounds; they nest in the steppe, the meadows, the marshes, the tundra, the undergrowth and even the forests.

Systematic position

Into 6 S is divided (the classification of Sibley had temporarily reduced the number of it to 2) but of the recent studies restored them:
  • scolopacinés limited to the Woodcock S;
  • gallinaginés , gathering the snipe S and the Bécassin S ( Limnodromus );
  • tringinés gathering the barges ( Limosa ), the Curlew ( Numenius ), the Maubèche S ( Bartramia ) and the knights ( Actitis , Aechmorhynchus , Catoptrophorus , Prosobonia †, Tringa and Xenus );
  • arénariinés , with the Tournepierre S;
  • calidridinés , subfamily of the Sandpiper X and the combatant S ( Philomachus );
  • phalaropodinés , having had formerly the statute of family (phalaropodidés).
