Schweinfurt is an old independent free city which forms part today of a Bavarian administrative unit of Low-Franconie (German Unterfranken). It is the third town of Low-Franconie after Würzburg and Aschaffenburg, and it is the seat of a chief town of district.
History
Schweinfurt is an old imperial city with 1200 years of history. Time of the German empire, the city was a free imperial city. It was incorporated in the reorganized territories of the Federal Republic of Germany after the second world war.
Its name evolved/moved during the time of Suinuurde, Suinfurte, Swinvordi, Sweinvort then Swein and to finish Schweinfurt. The Latin name Porcivadum corresponded within the meaning of a " ford where pigs arrêtent".
Industries of roll of the dice of Schweinfurt (Kugelfischer-Georg-Schäfer, Fichtel & Sachs and Vereignite-Kugelagerfabriken (Factories of rolls of the dice joined together) were the target of violent air raids during the Second world war.

- Of the museums Georg Schäfer and Otto Schäfer remarkable: The museum Georg Schäfer was open on September 23rd, 2000 by itself. It gathers important works of old German painting.
- the monument Friedrich Rückert in the middle of the place of the market. Friedrich Rückert, is a famous son of Schweinfurt, poet and orientalist, who is also dependant on the industry and the development of the industrial products of international repute of Schweinfurt, such as the roll of the dice and roller bearings.
- This monument is the starting point of a hiking trail of 140 km, called “Friedrich-Rückert-Wanderweg”.
