Schtroumpfs is a Belgian series of Cartoon of Pierre Culliford (known as Peyo) telling the history of imaginary people of small creatures humanoïdes Bleu are, living some share in a forest of Europe.

Origin of the name

At the origin of Schtroumpfs, a meal with Peyo during which he would have asked Franquin a salt box that it would have called a schtroumpf (“  passes to me… the schtroumpf !   ”) and the conversation would have continued in schtroumpf. Let us note that phonetically, schtroumpf practically decides as the German word Strumpf which means “  Sock   ” (Schtroumpfs being called Schlümpfe in German).

To note that the name of the dance Smurf comes directly from Schtroumpfs (" Smurfs" in English) because of the bonnet (white Phrygian cap turned over) of those which practiced it and which made think of that of the blue imps.

First appearances

Their first appearance was in the episode of the adventures of Johan and Pirlouit the flute with six holes , prépublié in the Newspaper of Spirou in 1958 and whose name in album became the flute with six Schtroumpfs . One meets there a tribe of blue imps with white bonnets living in a mushroom village and speaking the language schtroumpf. Johan and Pirlouit will still come to return visit to the schtroumpfs in the episode entitled the cursed country . The schtroumpfs will also come to lend to them strong hand in the albums the war of the 7 fountains and the magic spell of Maltrochu .

Then as of 1959, Schtroumpfs lived their own adventures in Spirou, initially in the seven form Mini-account S ( Schtroumpfs blacks (1959), the robber of Schtroumpfs (1959), the egg and Schtroumpfs (1960), the forgery Schtroumpf (1961), hunger of Schtroumpfs (1961), the hundredth Schtroumpf (1962), and Schtroumpf stealing (1963), albums of 48 each one pages, to assemble oneself), which will be republished under hard-bound mini-covers starting from 2004 (3 boxes of 2 mini-albums by the editions Niffle ) (Spirou will repeat with the mini-account the Baby Schtroumpf , drawn from images of the cartoon in 1984). Up to that point, one saw only Large the schtroumpf and small the schtroumpfs, apparently all identical. The physical differences and in character (schtroumpf with glasses, joker, strapping man, etc) do not appear - gradually - that at the moment when the schtroumpfs start to have their own stories.

Characteristics of Schtroumpfs and their world

The world of Schtroumpfs

The stories of Schtroumpfs are at the Moyen-Âge and the ages of Large Schtroumpf (542 years) and of Schtroumpfs (100 years) oblige us to admit that they are much older than Peyo itself.

These people live in a village in the middle of a forest, in a region called “the Country Curses” geographically difficult to locate, but certainly some share in Europe. During their first appearances, in the albums the Flute with Six Schtroumpfs and the Cursed Country of Johan and Pirlouit, the village is in the middle of black and naked trees, but as of the first album of Schtroumpfs, it is much more accessible, progressively to become a small romantic paradise with orée of a forest. The plan of the cursed Country is in the first album of Schtroumpfs, namely Schtroumpfs Noirs ; but this last was very quickly erroneous (on the plan of the first album, the village is reproduced for example enough far from the forest). Moreover, on the plan is indicated that “quite rare are the human ones which could there arrive”, whereas in the following albums it is known as that one cannot reach the village schtroumpf without Schtroumpf showing the way. Nevertheless, in an album ( Soup in Schtroumpfs ), Gargamel, after long and vain research, with the roof of despair, finds the village. Compared to the Gargamel wizard who with the human size, Schtroumpfs very small (are described like " tops like three Apple s"), but compared to nature surrounding their village, they have human size.

The episode of the Bébé Schtroumpf seems to show how are born Schtroumpfs: they are brought by a Cigogne, one evening of blue full moon, excluded Schtroumpfette (and Sassette) which is, at the origin, a creation of Gargamel.

They often have recourse to Homnibus, a sympathetic nerve old man magician which helps them at the time of problems of major importance like the health of Large Schtroumpf. It only belongs to human that Schtroumpfs do not fear, with Johan, Pirlouit and the King of the latter.

The Gargamel wizard and his Chat Azraël are the worst enemies of Schtroumpfs. But they are not upset with them for the same reasons. Gargamel needs some to manufacture the Philosopher's stone while Azraël, it, want quite simply to eat them.

The preferred food of Schtroumpfs is the Salsepareille and they live in houses having the appearance of large Champignon S. In " the Maudit" country; run a river on which Schtroumpfs built a stopping in order not to be flooded. The river is often an element very present of the intrigue.

Schtroumpfs are often disguised at the time of balls masked in the village or the album Cosmoschtroumpf to make him believe that it landed on another planet, but still when they give stage performances of the Petit Schtoumpferon red

There is no law at Schtroumpfs, just of the values morals and the respect. With many recoveries ( Financial Schtroumpf , One Schtroumpfe not Progress , Schtroumpf To defer , Schtroumpfissime ) Schtroumpfs try to adopt a system corresponding more to that of human, to fall down on their feet with the conclusion which them world is well better without.

In addition, Schtroumpfs and their world means-âgeux work much around the chemical experiments, of the unexplained events…

Schtroumpfs are also much in contact with nature, and prey with its whims ( hunger of Schtroumpfs ) but also with its delights: autumnal harvests, friendship and the communication which there exists between them and animals. Most known of the animals schtroumpfs is Puppy, at the origin the dog of Homnibus, which ends up being adopted by the Schtroumpf Baby.

The Schtroumpf language

Schtroumpfs have a particular language with differences according to whether they live in the north or the south of the village (where the place of the use of the word " schtroumpf" as verb or substantive changes, particularly in the made up words (see green Schtroumpf and green Schtroumpf ).

The language schtroumpf is really simpler: it is enough to replace the substantives by the word " schtroumpf" , by possibly granting it in kind and of number; the verbs are replaced by the verb " schtroumpfer". It is possible to apply the same rule to the adverbs, but generally the adjectives remain in conformity with the language of edition of the album. Thus, a dragon which spits of fire will be able to say a schtroumpf which schtroumpfe schtroumpf , but it is rare that Schtroumpf replaces at the same time the verb and the substantive in the same sentence by the word " schtroumpf".

A false debate divided the linguists in the years 1970 to determine if had to be said a schtroumpfe-stopper or a car-bouschtroumpf . This problem dividing Schtroumpfs is in the middle of the intrigue of the album green Schtroumpf and green Schtroumpf (which is also a satire on the French-speaking debates between and Dutch-speaking of Belgium). It is solved by Large Schtroumpf which finally requires of them not to more employ made up words. The two versions are thus erroneous: one must quite simply say a schtroumpf , or failing this a schtroumpfe-schtroumpf . Schtroumpf with glasses proposes as for him " the object which emerges the bouteilles" , which is not coherent with the Schtroumpf language.

Around Schtroumpfs

Schtroumpfs and semiology

The Italian semiologist Umberto Eco devoted several pages to the language schtroumpf to illustrate faculties of the human spirit in pattern-matching in an article whose French version (supervised by the author) gives for example to immediate recognition: I am the schtroumpf, the schtroumpf, inschtroumpfé the (see El Dedischado).

Albums like " Schtroumpfissime" , " Green Schtroumpf and green Schtroumpf" , in addition showed the interest of Peyo for the questions of meaning and of meant.

Toys

There exist plastic figurines of different Schtroumpfs. Certain people made important collections of these figurines and still exchange them on the sites of auction. There exist also cuddly toys schtroumpfs, the majority being only tests of copy (such as the cuddly toys Kinder etc) but the true cuddly toys are those where one can find the mark of the schtroumpfs there, they are extremely resembling. However, the true cuddly toys schtroumpfs are very rare in the department stores: one can despite everything find some on the auctions.
