School slaughter

A school slaughter (or school massacre ) is a voluntary criminal act having resulted in the death of several people in the enclosure of a school. Contrary to the other forms of school violence, there is not generally only one target; the main aim being to kill the maximum of people. These acts can be perpetrated by students, members of the personnel, former students even of the people external with the establishment.

Just like the terrorist attacks, the school massacres are traumatisants, are the subject of an international mediatization. It can cause a debate on the school or police discipline, and the circulation of the firearms in the territory.

The most known massacre is that of the that of the college of Columbine, popularized by the documentary one of Michael Moore: Bowling For Columbine , having resulted in the death of 14 high-school pupils and professors. Contrary to an generally accepted idea, these acts are not a specificity of the the United States of America. The most fatal act with firearm was held in Virginia at the university Virginia Tech on April 16th, 2007, when a pupil killed 32 people before committing suicide (see Fusillade of the University Virginia Tech).

A study carried out by the American secret services indicates that there did not exist of standard profile. The researchers noted that the killers do not make an unwise act. They plan, they buy weapons, they tell with others what they project. Their preparatory work can be very long. Some lived with their two parents in “an American ideal family”. Some were in single-parent families or adoptive houses. Some were solitary, but most of the time they had many friends.

  • Massacre of Thurston High School: After having killed his/her two parents the day before, Kip Kinkel, the May 21st 1998, shot at his/her comrades, making 2 died and 25 wounded. It was stopped by one of them and given to the police force.
  • Massacre of Jonesboro (county of Craighead, Arkansas), March 24th 1998: two children of 11 and 13 years kill five people and wound ten of them.
  • Massacre of the college of Columbine: Jefferson County (located close to Denver and Littleton), Colorado, the United States; April 20th, 1999, making 13 dead.

  • Massacre of Red Lake High School, perpetrated by Jeff Weise the 21 March 2005, making 10 died, of which the author, and a dozen casualties.
  • the Shooting with the college Dawson, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, Kimveer Gill made a death and 19 wounded. Taking an hostage to enter the college, it committed suicide after being touched with the arm by the police force.
  • the Fusillade with the college of Emsdetten in Germany made 27 wounded: a former student Sebastian Bosse (18 years) was introduced into the establishment armed with a knife, firearms and girdled explosives; he drew randomly, making 4 wounded by bullets, but 33 by the pollutant gases which he had sent before giving himself death.
  • the Slaughter of the University of Virginia Tech which made 33 victims (of which the killer Cho Seung-Hui), and 29 wounded, the 16 April 2007.
