School practices high studies
The practical School of high studies (EPHE) , founded in 1868 by a decree of the Minister for the State education Victor Duruy, is today a Grand establishment French of concerning higher education ministry in charge of Higher education. It is a out-walls establishment delocalized in several universities, institutes and research centres of Paris mainly but also in various towns of France (Montpellier, Bordeaux, Marseilles, Lyon, Dijon).
History of the EPHE
Created by imperial decree of July 31st, 1868 on the initiative of Victor Duruy, then Minister for the State education, the practical School of the high studies was not only to introduce research into the university world but, more still, to make of it a privileged instrument of formation for all. In 1868, the EPHE was divided into four sections:- Mathematical (IE section)
- Physical and chemistry (IIe section)
- Natural science and physiology (IIIe section)
- historical and philological Sciences (IVe section)
In 1886, the EPHE was increased of Ve section, Sciences religious, and Life section, Economic scenes and social, created well later in 1947. Little time after, the IE and IIe sections was attached either to the universities, or with CNRS. The École of the high studies in social sciences (EHESS) is resulting from the autonomisation, in 1975, of the Life section.
It currently includes/understands three sections and an institute:
- Life sciences and the ground (in the past IIIe section).
- historical and philological Sciences (IVe section).
- religious Sciences (Ve section).
- the European Institute in sciences of the religions.
Formation
The EPHE is an institution of scholarship of international repute whose original mission is to form, by the practice, with the basic research and applied in life sciences and ground, historical and philological sciences and religious sciences. The school gathers 240 teacher-researchers (170 directors of studies and 70 university lecturers) attached to teams, as well as about thirty allocatees of research. With the re-entry 2006, the EPHE accommodated 3200 registered students and listeners, including 32% foreign students.The lesson is exempted there by high level researchers. The courses or seminars are accessible to all as a non-registered student. The EPHE delivers clean diplomas, as well as national diplomas of second and third cycle (master and doctorate).
