School of the high studies in social sciences
Created by decree in 1975, the School of the high studies in social sciences (or EHESS ) is one of the great establishments French having for mission the Higher education and the Recherche.
It is resulting from the autonomisation of the Life Section of the practical École of the high studies. It has the role research and the formation with research in the field of the social sciences: the History, the Sociology, the economy, the Anthropology, the Demography, the Geography, the Archeology, the Psychology, the Linguistic , the Philosophy, the Right, Mathematical.
History
Institution
It is with an initiative of the Fondation Rockefeller, eager to support within the framework of the rebuilding of France of the post-war period of the sociological studies far away from the Marxism, which one owes creation in 1947 of the Life section of the practical École of the high studies. Directed by the historian Lucien Febvre, then preferred to Georges Gurvitch, great figure of the sociology of the time, this institution was going to be one of the centers of the intense reflection sociological of the Sixties, around François Furet or of Fernand Braudel.Fernand Braudel which succeeds Febvre, installs into 1962 the various research teams disseminated in the Latin Quarter in the current buildings of the Maison of the social sciences of the Boulevard Raspail, grace in particular to a financing of the Fondation Ford.
In 1975, the Life Section émancipe administratively of the School is practiced and become the School of the high studies in social sciences equipped with a statute university and entitled to deliver diplomas. It shelters from now on a pleiad of research centres covering the whole of social sciences: history, sociology, economy, social psychology, anthropology, surfaces cultural.
In March 2006, within the framework of the Movement anti-CPE, the EHESS was occupied during several days by a hundred people more or less close to the autonomous mobility. The direction of the school called upon the police force to make evacuate the occupants and insisted on the importance of the damage caused at the time of this occupation. This episode put at the great day the existing gap between the researchers and various elements of the Social movement associated with the dispute of the CPE. As a whole, the media especially insisted on the overflows which have occurred during this occupation, by largely eluding its political contents. Some of the occupants of the EHESS indeed expressed on this occasion of the sets of themes concerned with the revolutionary speech , the Anarchisme, or the decrease. Thereafter, several researchers of the EHESS took these events, their actors and the forms of their expression, for object of study. Whereas the French intellectuals had joined in May 1968 with the revolutionary movement, the occupation of March 2006 seems to be remained an incomprehensible event for the researchers of Ecole.
Activities
History: economies, companies and civilizations
Lucien Febvre and Fernand Braudel resulted from the École of the '' Annales '', current dominating the French history in the inter-war period, but disputed by the rise of the social sciences and incipient structuralism. Under criticisms of Claude Lévi-Strauss in particular, they will integrate the new contributions of sociology and the ethnology into the long, not-event-driven history already put at the honor by annals, until preaching the concept of “ a history whose passage is almost unperceivable ”. It was reproached to them, as well as with structuralist, to deny the policy and the influence of the man on his destiny at the time when were held the wars of colonial emancipation.Work of Braudel, Roy Ladurie and other historians who surround them will have a great influence in the research and the official teaching of the history as from the years 1960. Work of Jean-Marie Pesez will contribute to renovate the problems and the methodology of the Medieval archeology, and to make emerge in France the concept of material Culture.
New History, mentalities and the return of the ethnologist
While diversify the activities of what became one of the most prestigious places of teaching and research in social sciences in France, the EHESS is during the years 1970 the seat of the Nouvelle History, attentive with the evolution of mentalities promoted by the historians Jacques Le Goff and Pierre Nora.During this time, with Georges Balandier then Marc Trough, a generation of critical ethnologists heirs to the French colonial tradition founds the modern sociology of the Third World countries before applying the methods of anthropology to the study of their companies of origin.
Sociology
Pierre Bourdieu exerted there long years like at the Collège de France. Today, one counts Robert Castel and Alain Touraine there, since long time, like Luc Boltanski, to quote only these two examples.
Schooling
Since the Reform LMD, the École of the high studies in social sciences accommodates students starting from the course of Master. To be allowed in the establishment, the titular candidate of a license in social sciences must above all be sponsored by one of the research directors. The School also offers a course sanctioned by its specific diploma giving access to the doctoral studies and the contests of the public office (Capes and aggregation in particular). The school accommodates 2.800 students and more than 200 theses are per annum constant there.
