Created by decree in 1975, the School of the high studies in social sciences (or EHESS ) is one of the great establishments French having for mission the Higher education and the Recherche.
It is resulting from the autonomisation of the Life Section of the practical École of the high studies. It has the role research and the formation with research in the field of the social sciences: the History, the Sociology, the economy, the Anthropology, the Demography, the Geography, the Archeology, the Psychology, the Linguistic , the Philosophy, the Right, Mathematical.
Fernand Braudel which succeeds Febvre, installs into 1962 the various research teams disseminated in the Latin Quarter in the current buildings of the Maison of the social sciences of the Boulevard Raspail, grace in particular to a financing of the Fondation Ford.
In 1975, the Life Section émancipe administratively of the School is practiced and become the School of the high studies in social sciences equipped with a statute university and entitled to deliver diplomas. It shelters from now on a pleiad of research centres covering the whole of social sciences: history, sociology, economy, social psychology, anthropology, surfaces cultural.
In March 2006, within the framework of the Movement anti-CPE, the EHESS was occupied during several days by a hundred people more or less close to the autonomous mobility. The direction of the school called upon the police force to make evacuate the occupants and insisted on the importance of the damage caused at the time of this occupation. This episode put at the great day the existing gap between the researchers and various elements of the Social movement associated with the dispute of the CPE. As a whole, the media especially insisted on the overflows which have occurred during this occupation, by largely eluding its political contents. Some of the occupants of the EHESS indeed expressed on this occasion of the sets of themes concerned with the revolutionary speech , the Anarchisme, or the decrease. Thereafter, several researchers of the EHESS took these events, their actors and the forms of their expression, for object of study. Whereas the French intellectuals had joined in May 1968 with the revolutionary movement, the occupation of March 2006 seems to be remained an incomprehensible event for the researchers of Ecole.
Work of Braudel, Roy Ladurie and other historians who surround them will have a great influence in the research and the official teaching of the history as from the years 1960. Work of Jean-Marie Pesez will contribute to renovate the problems and the methodology of the Medieval archeology, and to make emerge in France the concept of material Culture.
During this time, with Georges Balandier then Marc Trough, a generation of critical ethnologists heirs to the French colonial tradition founds the modern sociology of the Third World countries before applying the methods of anthropology to the study of their companies of origin.
Pierre Bourdieu exerted there long years like at the Collège de France. Today, one counts Robert Castel and Alain Touraine there, since long time, like Luc Boltanski, to quote only these two examples.
Since the Reform LMD, the École of the high studies in social sciences accommodates students starting from the course of Master. To be allowed in the establishment, the titular candidate of a license in social sciences must above all be sponsored by one of the research directors. The School also offers a course sanctioned by its specific diploma giving access to the doctoral studies and the contests of the public office (Capes and aggregation in particular). The school accommodates 2.800 students and more than 200 theses are per annum constant there.
