School of professional training of the bars of the Court of Appeal of Paris
The school of professional training of the bars of the Court of Appeal of Paris (EFB) form the futures lawyer S of the bars within the competence of the Court of Appeal of Paris, commonly called the “bar of Paris”.
Recruitment
The students have a statute of pupil lawyer, and are recruited on an extremely selective examination (become even contest in certain universities, notammant Paris 1), examination made up of written and oral legal tests.The selective examination of entry with the EFB is organized by the various institutes of legal studies (IEJ) of the Paris region in September; each IEJ being attached to the universities of Paris having a Faculty of Law (Paris-I, Paris-II, Paris-V, Paris-X, Paris-XI, Paris-XIi in particular).
The holders of a doctorate of right can be directly registered with the EFB. The doctors in right nevertheless are compelled with the same requirements of schooling as the candidates having passed the examination of admission. Approximately thousand two hundred pupils are allowed each year, on thousands of candidates; rate of success oscillates approximately between 15 and 20%.
Although a control of right is enough to be candidate with the examination, the selectivity - moreover increasing with the reform of the examination - fact that the majority of the candidates are titular of one or of several diploma of third cycle, and call upon preparations deprived to increase their chances of success with the examination.
Course
Since the reform of 2005, the formation with the EFB is spread out over eighteen months. These eighteen months are made up as follows:- six months of schooling to the EFB;
- six months in individual teaching project (PPI);
- six months as a law firm.
If they must obligatorily finish their schooling by the training course as a law firm, the pupils of the EFB are free to start with the six-month period of acquisition of fundamental with the EFB or with their pi. The six-month period of acquisition of fundamental with the EFB is organized of such kind that the pupils lawyers can in same time, if they wish it to make a training course in alternation. Pi gets along of a pre-specialization, a training course in jurisdiction - possibly as a law firm -, or continuation of a professional master or research started before at the beginning of the schooling with the EFB, which begins in January. The six-month period with the EFB aims to the acquisition of fundamental of the profession, i.e. knowledge of order deontologic, the control of the jurisdictional and legal techniques, and the knowledge of at least a foreign language in all these legal aspects. The knowledge to make as regards legal councils is developed as much than the aptitude for the pleading and the techniques legal.
At the end of their schooling, the pupils lawyers must pass a series of examinations in order to obtain the training certificate with the occupation of lawyer (WRAPPED). WRAPPED allows them to exert in the capacity as lawyer, and to be registered with the bars of the Court of Appeal of Paris subject to the oath-taking.
The graduate lawyers of the EFB are generally recruited by large law firms, but some choose to create their own law firm, or to become lawyers of company. The question of the compatibility of the lawyer statute, whose independence is the spearhead, with the paid function of lawyer of company is the subject of many debates.
The tendency of last promotions of the EFB is directed primarily towards the exercise of the occupation of business lawyer.
The EFB also ensures the continuing education of lawyers, this mission of the school all the more takes importance which continuing education became obligatory for all lawyers: twenty hours per annum, or forty hours over two years.
