the École of Foams was a French military academy of 1829 with 1988.

Following the cuisantes defeats of the French Navy at the beginning of the 19th century, marine undisciplined and disastrous organization, king Louis Philippe decides the rehandling of the National marine. An ordinance of November 12th 1822 reorganizes the body of the crews of line, it envisages in particular the incorporation of young boys from 12 to 14 years, children of sailors, war orphans or workmen of marine, whose only terms of reference are to be “healthy body and vaccinated”; the parents commit themselves not withdrawing them before the 18 years age, under penalty of refunding the expenses of their instruction and their maintenance.

The ordinance of May 28th 1829 gives rise to really the School of Foams, by fixing the program of instruction. The two companies of Brest and Toulon are composed each one of a hundred of foams, that of Rochefort of sixty, that of Cherbourg and Lorient of fifty. For their instruction, they follow, with the marine apprentices the lessons of reading, writing and calculation then organized for all the personnel of the crews of line. Foams take part with their company in the armament of the frigates or vessels. At 16 years, they can continue their formation as marine apprentices by contracting a voluntary engagement; failing this, they can be kept in the companies up to 18 years. Some think that the creation of these foam companies results mainly from a reason Humanitaire.

March 1st 1832 is created the 1st company of foams of Brest under the command of the lieutenant the One-eyed one. Of a manpower of 100 foams, it is installed with the Cayenne (barracks of the sailors) with Recouvrance with the Crew of Line. Later, on January 12th 1835, one 2nd foam company is formed in this port under the command of the lieutenant MAGRE. This company is installed with the Capuchins, brood built starting from 1695 on the grounds which currently the workshops of the machines of the arsenal occupy. This convent allotted to the Navy in 1801, was used as quartering at the school of the apprentices gunners.

In 1835, the foam companies of Rochefort and Lorient are removed at the same time as the crews of line of these ports.

Armorique remains school of foams until in 1940, but the noise of the German boots being made hear, foams embark in catastrophe on the battleship Paris for a tour passing by England, Morocco, Algeria then Toulon where they gather on board the Ocean .

To the release, mission is entrusted to the commander Coz of reorganizing the school of foams on the site of Dourdy with Loctudy in Finistere south.

In September 1960, the school returns to Brest to occupy the buildings of the old naval college. Recruitment is done in the whole France. To postulate, It is necessary to have BEPC or at least the level of a class of second. The files are examined by a commission. The candidates undergo medical examinations, psychological and school. The pupils must contract a five years engagement in the marine as from their exit of the school. Half of time is devoted to reserve training, maritime and sporting, supplemented by exits at sea on the buildings of the national marine ( Beautiful-Hen , the Star , the Mutin , Hortentia and the Eyelet ) other half of time is devoted to the studies.

Created in 1834, the school of foams after 154 years closes its doors definitively on July 15th, 1988. A historical evocation of the prestigious school is read by their last director.

Its flag, given on November 11th, 1958 to Brest of the hands of delegated of the Minister for the Armies is carried since 1988 by the guard of the School of maistrance. In July 1999, the flag of the school of foams was entrusted to the permanent officers of the C.I.N. (Center of naval instruction).
