School of design of the UQAM

The school of design of the UQAM is one of the components of the Université from Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). It was founded in 1974, one teaches the Design there.

Since the creation of the University from Quebec in Montreal in 1969, by the integration of several existing institutions of which the School of the Art schools of Montreal, the few professors who taught in the modules of Design 2D and of Design 3D were gathered in the Department of visual arts 3D which was placed in the buildings of old the School of the Art schools and the architecture of Montreal.

In 1974, following the total reorganization of the Sector of arts, the Department of design was created which gathered twelve professors then. They were Graphistes, Architectes or Designers, and worked disciplinarily in the two new programs reformulated at that time: graphic Design and Design of the environment.

This creation allowed the disciplines design to take an important place within the UQAM, inter alia by the engagement of several professors who opened new research fields/creation and which modified the teaching objectives and practices.

The creation of the department also made it possible to acquire the specialized material and necessary spaces located, between 1976 and 1995, in old the Technical training school of Montreal, and then in an exclusive house, work of the architect daN Hanganu.

In 2000, the transformation of the department of design into École of design coincides with the development of the programmings of higher learning of second and third cycle.

These developments were initiated, supported and consolidated by the directions which followed one another since 1974, in close cooperation with most of the teaching staff.
