Schoelcher (Martinique)

Schoelcher is a common French, located in the department of the Martinique and the area Martinique. Its inhabitants is called Schoelcherois.

Initially named Box-Ship , it is renamed Schœlcher in 1888 in homage to Victor Schoelcher initiating of the abolition of slavery in France and in its colonies.

It is in this commune that is the campus inhabitant of Martinique of the Université Antille-Guyana.

Schoelcher is twinned with, city from where the parents in Victor Schoelcher are originating. Each year since 1980, the Alsatian schoolboys come in Schoelcher and of the schoolboys schoelchérois go to Alsace.

Schoelcher was also twinned, in 1998, with, because Victor Schoelcher finished his days there.
