Schlumbergera is a kind of fleshy plants belonging to the family of the Cactaceae .
Schlumbergera kautskyi (Horobin & McMillan) NR. P. Taylor
There exist many hybrids (of which the flowers take various colors: purple, pink, red, orange or white) among which the famous cactus of Christmas ( Schlumbergera ×buckleyi , crossing of Schlumbergera truncata and Schlumbergera russelliana ). The cactus of Easter ( Hatiora gaertneri ) belongs him to the kind relative Hatiora . They are plants épiphyte S or Lithophyte S of the zone néotropicale (Brésil).
The “branches” of the Schlumbergera resemble small escutcheons joined the ones to the others and the flowers leave areola S at their end.
One can obviously reproduce this phenomenon artificially by putting the plants at the darkness during certain numbers of hours, even if it still makes day; shifted flowerings are thus obtained and it is not rare to buy thus in the garden-centers of Schlumbergera which precisely flower at the time when one decided to sell them, any time in the year.
