Schleithal

Schleithal is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

The name Alsacien of the commune is Schlâdl (without “official” character).

Its inhabitants is called Schleithalois.

Geography

Schleithal is a small village being located in the Northern the Low-Rhine at some steps of the Franco-German border. This border is defined by the Lauter which gives its name besides to the small town of Lauterbourg which is with the mouth with the Rhine.

A notable characteristic is its main street (secondary road 244), long 4 kilometers, which constitutes a record in Alsace. The cycle track which skirts the village to north, parallel to the RD 244, corresponds to the old railway line connecting Wissembourg to Lauterbourg.

History

The first writings on Schleithal go back to 1145, but some think that the village goes back to 631 (year of creation of the abbey of Wissembourg).

Administration

During the period of fastening to the German Empire (1971-1918), Schleithal depended on the canton (1) of Lauterbourg ( Lauterburg ), on the circle (2) of Wissembourg ( Weissenburg ) and on the district (3) of Low-Alsace ( Hoch Elsaß ).

Demography

Places and monuments

The first church was built at 13th or the century. It was located on the most point of the village and was built out of stone. The villagers took refuge there at the time of the attacks. But this church would have burned during a military invasion.
