Schirrhein

Schirrhein is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

Denominations

During the period of fastening of the Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire (1871 - 1918), Schirrhein was called Schirrheim . (to note the m final, always present in the name of a “road of Schirrheim” of the very close town of Haguenau).

According to the site of the firemen of Schirrhein and Schirrhoffen, the name of Schirrhein would come from two Celtic roots: “to scir”, meaning “place or hangar to dry the hay” (which would have given the German word Scheune , meaning “barn”), and “rain”, meaning “covered slope of meadows” (and which would not thus have strictly any relationship with the Germanic name of the river the Rhine ( Rhein ).
