Schengen is a locality and commune of the south-east of the Luxembourg near the point tri-border of the Germany, the France and Luxembourg. It belongs to the commune bearing the same name, in the canton of Remich. It is a wine commune, belonging to the vineyard native of the Moselle region. The locality counted in 2004 a population of 425 inhabitants. Other localities in the commune are Remerschen and Wintrange.
The notoriety of the village came the June 14th 1985, when the Traité on the suppression of the frontier checks European was signed on the ship Princesse Marie-Astrid anchored on the the Moselle near the place creating what from now on is usually called the Espace Schengen.
Following this notoriety the village of Schengen was named chief town of commune on September 3rd 2006. Before this date Remerschen held this function. An international college, to Perl, German city bordering, should bear its name.
