The town of Schellenberg is located in the plains of the Liechtenstein on banks of the the Rhine. It covers a surface of 3,5 km ² and is populated by 978 inhabitants (2004).
The zone was initially populated by the Celtes, then the Rhétiens. The territory was conquered by Rome in the year 15 after JC and integrated in the province of Rhétie. The province became later a county under Charlemagne, county which was later unceasingly divided by heritage.
The sovereignty of Schellenberg was bought by the Counts of Vaduz in 1437 and the two counties in fact were joined together. After the Treated of Basle in 1499, they were both attached to the Austria. Various dynasties bought and sold the counties until their repurchase by the Liechtenstein at the beginning of the 18th century. The territory was high the January 23rd 1719 with the row of Principauté.
