Schauspielhaus (Zurich)
The Schauspielhaus is a Théâtre with Zurich (Suisse).
In addition to its principal room Am Pfauen (Rämistrasse) , which contains 750 places, the institution also manages 2 rooms with the Schiffbau .
History
The building Am Pfauen builds in 1892 like popular theater with Biergarten and a ground of game of bowls is initially used as variety hall. Since 1901 the director of the opera of Zurich rents this building for the representation of Die Mitschuldigen of Goethe. Between 1903 and 1926 the room is managed by the private co-operative Am Pfauen . Between 1926 and 1938 by the Zürcher Schauspiel AG .
Until 1933 the theater was little known. The efforts to establish in Zurich a theater of quality were vain.
From 1933 much of German actors and directors emigrated in Zurich and took share with the troop. Therese Giehse, Albert Bassermann, Ernst Ginsberg, Kurt Horwitz, Leopold Lindtberg, Grete Heger and much of others.
During the Second world war the theater was politically committed and it have many parts Antifasciste S. Swiss Frontistes which defended the ideas anti-semites and of nationalism caused the theater there so that certain representations were done under police protection.
In 1938 the owners of the theater, in prey with financial problems due to the conditions of operating, are constrained to sell. Thanks to the mayor of the time Emil Klöti and the editor Emil Oprecht the theater is taken again by the city which founds the company Neue Schauspiel AG .
Under the control of Oskar Wälterlin, between 1938 and 1961, much of parts of Bertolt Brecht had their first representation in this theater. Majority of the pieces of max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt also.
In 2002 and 2003, under the direction of the director Christoph Marthaler Schauspielhaus is elected theater of the year .
