Schafik Jorge Handal (13 or October 14th 1930 - January 24th 2006) is a politician El Salvador IEN member of the Frente Farabundo Martí para Liberación Nacional , former unfortunate candidate with presidential of 2004 vis-a-vis Elías Antonio Saca.

Of 1959 with 1994, Handal is the general secretary of the Salvadorian Communist party. Former member of the guerilla, Handal takes part in the unification of the five movements of opposition armed under the name of Frente Farabundo Martí para Liberación Nacional (Face Farabundo Martí for the national release).

After the peace agreements of Chapultepec in 1992, the FMLN is transformed into political party and Handal assumes the role of general coordinator of it. In 1997, Handal is elected with the National Assembly and there takes the head of the group FMLN .

Handal presents to the Salvadorian presidential election June 21st 2004 and loses with the second tower vis-a-vis Elías Antonio Saca of the Alianza Republicana Nacionalista or ARENA by 36% compared with 58% for Tony Saca.

Handal is downward Palestinian emigrants just like Elías Antonio Saca.
