Scene of the massacres of Scio

Scène of the massacres of Scio is a table of Eugene Delacroix.

This table represents the massacres perpetrated in Chios by the Othoman at the time of the Guerre of Greek independence.

On this table, the principal disturbing element at the time of its observation consists of the inversion of the victorious/overcome figurative roles. Indeed, the Greeks enjoyed during the Lights will have to know democratic antique to them, redécouvert recently: they were thus regarded commonly as civilized, close to Europeans. However, here, they evoke contrary to pity: no Greek heroes defending oneself valiantly against the Othoman troops, only some rare inhabitants disarmed not being in a position to resist the invader. Same manner, the Othoman rider with the right-hand side of the table overhangs all the scene and adopts a heroic posture.

But it is possible to understand that Delacroix thus seeks not to celebrate the resistance and the heroism of some resistant ones, but rather the bravery of these people entire victim.
