Scat

The scat is a form of vocal improvisation where Onomatopée S are used rather than Parole S.

According to Mezz Mezzrow (in Really the Blues , its Autobiography), it is Louis Armstrong which for the first time recorded of the scat. At a session with the Hot Five, Louis starts Heebies Jeebies , makes the clown, and of the blow paper releases where the words were written. It must then invent the remainder to finish the chorus. “At this time precise, the moment when Louis dropped this bit of paper and gave free course to his genius of Improvisation, it marked the beginning of a musical fashion which was going to make fury and become integral part of the American culture, as well as Mickey Mouse or the Coca-Cola. All “the hi-of-Ho” bawlers, “vo-of-O-C” and of “boop-boop-a-doo” which emerged thereafter in all the country…, made a success of for the majority only one pale commercial imitation of what Louis had done spontaneously and with a perfect musical direction. ” (Mezz Mezzrow, Really The Blues/the rage of living , p. 178, the Book of Pocket, 1341-1342, ED. Buchet-Chastel).

There exist however older recordings of scat, in particular of Don Redman and Cliff Edwards. Jello Roll Morton affirmed already to sing it with Tony Jackson in New-Orleans in 1905!

Mezz neglects to pay homage to the other genius of the scat: Ella Fitzgerald carried this form of improvisation at tops that Louis Armstrong did not reach itself.

Cab Calloway brought also much to the movement scat, with successes such as Zaz-Zuh-Zaz , or The Scat Song .

The cartoon Aristochats produces by Walt Disney Company comprises one or two scenes where the cats buddies of O' Malley, whose “gang leader” is precisely called Scat Cat , break out in scat - the word game between cat (meaning “Chat” in English) and scat being used in the air “Everybody wants to Be has cat”.

Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye left an unforgettable duet of scat in the interpretation of When The Saints of the film The Five Pennies in 1959.

In France, Michel Legrand and France Gall at her beginnings have remarkably illustrated the kind.

Always in France, the singer Anne Ducros develops an art of the very personal scat while remaining in the great tradition initiated by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

The scat was also popularized near the general public by the pianist and singer John Larkin , under the pseudonym of Scatman, which was during a few weeks a high-speed motorboat of the Top 50 with its hit " I amndt the scat man" , under the onomatopoeias " Ski Bi di Bi di C bap do".
