The kind was described by Perty in 1830.

Scaptocoris Perty is a kind of insects Hétéroptère (bugs) rather particular because it belongs to the family Cydnidae and thus its species are underground at all the stages, larval and adult. Geographically, it is a kind of insect of the South American continent (i.e. the zone néotropicale) and comprises only some species. The larvae and the adults nourish themselves by pricking the roots of plants. The adults leave ground sometimes to be disseminated while flying. S. castanea is a devastating Insecte (harmful Insect) of the cultures in Brazil.
