Scanlation

Scanlation (neologism not recognized by the French Academy), sometimes also named scanslation , scantrad or mangascan , refers to a Manga which was scanné and translated by fans of its native tongue (usually the Japanese or the Korean ) towards another language (generally the English, the French, the Spanish or the German ).

The scanlations are generally distributed free in remote loading on Internet, or by IRC, or BitTorrent.

History

At the beginning, the raison d'être of the scanlations was that the mangas were available only in the country of origin, and difficult to import. Thus, of Japanese the mangas scannaient and sent them to friends in the United States or in Europe. The phenomenon then largely developed.

Today, there are hundreds of groups of translation, the majority to translate the mangas into English. To also note that a parallel movement, the Fansub which consists in subtitling the Animes, developed in a completely similar way.

Legality

The scanlations are generally illegal because of absence of agreement of the authors. However, in the French right, it would be necessary that the groups of translation are attacked in justice to prohibit them.

The Community

France also has good number of teams (teams) of scantrad whose majority translate of English into French. Some are however helped by Japanese translators, enabling them to work since the source language. The scantrad US remainder more developed with several hundreds of teams, which translate either of Japanese (with 25%), or of Chinese (to 45%), or of Korean (to 15%), or other European languages (French and Italian mainly) (to 10%) and even of Kampuchean (to 5%). It is thus necessary to be careful and pay attention to the translations of translations when one translates of English into French.
