The Scanie (in Swedish Skåne ) is a historical province of Sweden, located at the southern end of the country. Its territory corresponds to current the Comté of Skåne, and its capital is Malmö.

Geography

The Scanie is bordered in the North-West by the county of Halland, in north by that of Kronoberg and in the North-East by that of Blekinge.

Scanie is separated from the Denmark by the strait of Sund ( Öresund in Swedish, Øresund in Danish). Since July 2000, the bridge of Øresund between the Denmark and the Sweden connects Malmö in Scanie to Copenhagen on the Danish island of Sjælland.

History

The Scanie formed integral part of Denmark until the Traité of Roskilde of 1658. The Danish Reform started in Scanie and the Danish currencies were beaten in Scanie.

In the literature

The investigations of the inspector Kurt Wallander, the main character of several detective novels of the Swedish writer Henning Mankell, occur to the police station from Ystad. Mankell returns perfectly to the fog of the winter in scanie in its novel the Man who smiled .
