Scandal of information
The scandal of information in South Africa leads in 1978 to the fall of the government of John Vorster.
In the years 1970, Connie Mulder, Minister for the information of John Vorster, undertakes to improve the image of the South Africa abroad by modern means. It tries an offensive policy to improve the image of the government and its policy while trying to convince or buy Western mediums and various lobbies.
Secret appropriations are granted by Vorster its minister and his Secretary of State, Eschel Rhoodie. A pro-governmental daily newspaper in English language, “The Citizen”, is launched like several actions of propaganda bound for the foreign countries.
The excessive way of life of certain intermediaries whose Eschel Rhoodie ended up drawing the attention in particular rivals of Mulder like Pieter Botha. The scandal bursts in 1978 kind Vorster to accept, like loophole, the honorary post of president of the republic.
The Erasmus commission shows in 1979 the embezzlements obliging Vorster to resign in June. The same year, Mulder is excluded from the government, then Parliament and finally of the national Parti.
