Scandal of decorations
In France, the scandal of decorations of the Third Republic began the October 7th 1887 when the press reveals a traffic of decorations set up by Daniel Wilson, son-in-law of the president of the Republic Jules Grévy and appointed Indre-et-Loire.
The investigation reveals that Wilson resold from an office of the Elysium of the thousands of decorations - in particular the Légion of honor for 25.000 Francs of the time in particular to pour subsidies with newspapers of province. Among his accomplices, one counts the general Caffarel, a lady Limouzin, a Ratazzi lady.
The street, the journalists, the politicking but especially Georges Clémenceau and Jules Ferry are baited on the president Jules Grévy and push it with the resignation after a vote of the Parliament.
As for Daniel Wilson, protected by his parliamentary privilege, it sits crânement in the hemicycle. It ends up being condemned in 1888 but is discharged in call: it had been continued for “corruption of civil servant”, but a deputy not being civil servant the procedure had been declared null. At once it was allocated imperturbably to the assembly, indifferent to the gibes and the opprobrium of his colleagues. He will be re-elected in 1893 and 1896.
