The Échelles are a whole of Comptoir S commercial ground benches of Islam of the 16th century at the 20th century by various European powers, of which initially the France, under the mode of the Capitulations.
Description
One distinguishes the Scales from the Raising of those of Cruelty. The first are the ports of Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria, as well as cities located inside the grounds: Cairo, Alep, Damas. Certain Scales extend to whole areas: the Crete, Cyprus, the Morée.One names Échelles of the Raising the commercial ports of the Eastern Mediterranean, subjected to the Othoman domination and in which Europeans have counters. This expression owes its origin on the scales or degrees pressed on the moles of the ports of these places and with the bottom of which the vessels come to discharge the passengers and the goods.
The Scales of Cruelty, in North Africa, are much more numerous. One counts Tripoli, the Cape Nègre, Tunis, Bastion of France, the Hold, Bône, Algiers, Oran, Salé, Safi, Mogador, Agadir and Fès among the principal ones.
