Saxophone double bass
The saxophone double bass is a Musical instrument serious part of the family of the saxophones. Its Tonalité is in mi . " Large-père" of the family, it is a rare instrument, since only one about thirty specimens were built by it between 1846 and 2000.
Description
Three factors proposed some: Evette and Schaeffer in built a series of a score about 1920: one can hear it in the orchestra of Mistinguett, or in one of films of Fantomas, for example. A model is exposed at Dresser-Cramp . In addition to their very approximate accuracy, their mechanical heaviness, their pallet of attacks limited, the old models use a material specific (sheers, nozzles) very difficult to get, and their big size (more than 2 meters) makes them almost impossible to transport, which still reduces their capacity of action.
Tubax
There exists since 1999 an instrument close to the saxophone double bass: the Tubax, new a mini-double bass developped at the point in 1999 by the German factor Benedikt Eppelsheim, to which another page is devoted. Qualities of swiftness, the pallet of attacks much richer of this new version caused a real passion: many saxophonists are interested from now on in this instrument in their activities of concert performer. Among which, one can quote Jay C. Easton (which also has a tubax " under-contrebasse" in Sib), Serge Bertocchi, Thomas KJ Mejer (who have a tubax in C), Rico Gubler and Marcus Weiss.
Current production
Orsi proposes another model of it on order since the years 1980, played in particular by Anthony Braxton and Daniel Kientzy.
Recently, the German factor Benedikt Eppelsheim again produces saxophones double bass which profit from all the improvements made to the mechanism of the other saxophones, and which go down to the low register (like the majority of the modern sax baritone).
