Saxony-Gotha

The Saxony-Gotha is old a Saxon duchy, made up in 1640 in favor of Ernest {{Ier}} of Saxony-Gotha (1640-1675), younger brother of Guillaume {{Ier}} of Saxony-Weimar and Albert of Saxony-Eisenach. Plus Saxony-Cobourg (1641) and Saxony-Altenbourg (1672), it was transmitted by Ernest 1st the Piles to her oldest son Frederic {{Ier}} of Saxony-Gotha (1675), and consequently formed the duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenbourg from which several branches were detached in 1680: the Saxony-Cobourg, the Saxony-Meiningen, the Saxony-Hildburghausen, the Saxony-Saafeld, in favor of the younger brothers of the reigning duke of Saxony-Gotha-Altenbourg.

This duchy successively formed part of the Confédération of the Rhine and the Germanic Confédération until its dissolution in 1825.

It included/understood the principalities of Gotha and Altenbourg. In 1825, with died of the last duke, Frederic IV of Saxony-Gotha-Altenbourg, the duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenbourg was divided between:

  • the duke of Saxony-Cobourg, which accepted the duchy of Gotha: to see Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha ,
  • the duke of Saxony-Hildburghausen, with which échut the duchy of Altenbourg,
  • the duke of Saxony-Meiningen, which accepted the bailliages Rœmhild, Kranichfeld and Cambourg

These three duchies became confederated States of the German Empire until in 1918. In 1920, the old duchy of Saxony-Gotha, become free State, was built-in (following the example other old Saxon duchies) in the Land of Thuringe.
