Sawmill
A sawmill is an industrial facility or artisanal of sawing of the Bois.
The first Scie S mechanics were driven by Moulin S: the sawmills were thus traditionally located near the River.
The sawmills are industries of first transformation of wood. They provide semi-finished products, sawings, which are generally intended for an industry of second transformation (joinery, cabinet work, construction, etc) in charge to manufacture objects or parts of objects of consumption.
General operation
The sawmills are generally supplied out of wood crudes starting from forestry developments.
A sawmill includes/understands mainly:
- a park with barks where are stored wood crudes,
- one or more lines of sawing ensuring the cutting of wood and the sorting of the products,
- a park with sawings where and the boards and other products stored are arranged.
The park with barks
The Grume S are generally brought to the sawmill by Camion S and are Stock ées outside in what one names the park with barks which forms the stock of the company. This stage, a Opérateur intervenes by purging certain barks. Indeed, it happens that some of them are split, reached rots,… on a few tens of centimetres. The operator can also precut them in order to adapt them according to the size of the bench of sawing or the size of the end products.
The bench of sawing
The barks are then brought on the bench of sawing to be output there one by one. According to the orders received in the company, the operator seizes the dimensions (length, width, thickness) awaited on the level of the board in a Ordinateur. In the most modern installations, the bark passes in front of several cameras which will measure the latter in order to optimize the production of boards and to thus obtain the best output raw material/end product. According to the installations, the bark spends several times on the level of the Scie if the bench counts only one of them, or makes one passage if several saws are associated the ones with the others. The saws can be simple traditional circular saws or large also circular ribbons.
The Travelator
The boards are then conveyed by travelator in order to store them prior to delivery. They are obviously classified according to their dimensions. The conditions of storage are important because according to the temperature and of the Humidité, the Bois can dilate or retract.
Treatments
According to their final use, the Planche S can be delivered rough or be treated beforehand (against the Insecte S, the Pourriture S, the Feu,…).

Each gasoline of trees having its own characteristics, the blades of the saws are adapted consequently. The sawmills are thus in general specialized; one distinguishes, overall, the sawmills treating only the Résineux and those not treating that the Feuillu S. Some even specialized that on certain type of leafy trees. Indeed, of the gasolines as the Chêne have a hard wood, whereas others as the Merisier have a tender wood. The teeth of the saws must thus be adapted. These blades are very fragile and they ask to be sharpened very regularly. It is frequent to find objects metal (cast iron, iron, copper) in the Grume S in the form of Clou S, Mitraille or stray bullets with the war or hunting…). In the wood of certain gasolines (Oak, Ash.) the ferrous or copper foreign bodies leave traces noirâtres which announce their presence. To change a blade requires the complete stop of the bench from where a loss of productivity. The sawyers are thus very attentive with this problem. Thus, they propose less important prices at the time of the purchase of barks coming from forests mitraillées at the time of a Guerre. It is the case of certain forests of the red zone, North and North East of the France. Detecting metal are often used for high-risk wood, coming for example from the Forêts of war the area of Verdun.
