Savonie

The Savonie is old a province Is Finland. Savo is the name Finnois and Savolax the name Swedish. The province was located between the Häme and the Karelia. Today, this territory forms part of the contemporary province essentially of Eastern Finland. Its old borders correspond about to the unit formed by the areas of Savonie of North and Savonie of the South.

The historical language in Savonie is the dialect Finnois Savo, recently illustrated by a traditional song, Ievan Polkka, largely diffused on the Internet in its version interpétée by the folk group Loituma.

History

The area represents the surface of original dwelling of an important Finnish tribe, Savoniens. It was annexed by Sweden as of the Traité of Nöteborg, but remained frontier with Russia until the beginning of XVIe century (with a disputed border because little precisely definite), and thus prone to many invasions. The main target of the Russian armies remained invariably the only fortified town of important of the area: Olavinlinna of Savonlinna.

With the favor of an inversion of the power struggle between the Russia of Pierre Large the and the declining Sweden, the castle will be captured at the time of the Guerre Russo-Suédoise of 1741-1743.
