Savenay is a common French, located in the department of Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire. The oldest mention that one knows of Savenay finds in the Cartulaire de Redon, in 848, in the form Savannacum . Savenay belongs to the historical Brittany.

Its inhabitants is called the Savenaisiens and Savenaisiennes .

Geography

Savenay is located on the Sillon of Brittany, the primary assembly line which marks the southern part of the Brittany. Its landscape is thus marked by the transition between a hill and the marshes of the edge of the Loire.

The city is the place of important crossings of grid systems, at the same time for the rail network (since Nantes, separation Redon - Saint-Nazaire) and the Highway network with the exchanger N165 (Nantes - Brest) - N171 (Laval - La Baule).

Communes bordering

The commune is close to Campbon, the Vault-Launay, the Lavau-on-Loire, Bouée, Malville and Bouvron. Only the latter belongs to the close canton, that of Blain.

History

  • At the 9th century the city is known under the name of Condita Savannacum
  • 1287 Savenay is a parish divisee into 5 fairies.
  • At the 13th century it is attached to the stronghold of Rock- theBernard
  • 1435 Gilles de Rais, sifted debts, sell it to Guillemette, widow of Guillaume Ferron
  • 1467 Jean of Laval, baron of the Rock Bernard, repurchases the parish.
  • 1547 the rock in Savenay becomes plain in fact to the Viscount of Donges. It will be the case until the revolution.
  • February 26th 1790 the city becomes place chief of district with 18 communes.
  • December 23rd 1793: the general Kléber inflicts in Savenay a final defeat with the Vendean armies. It is the Bataille of Savenay. End of the Transfered of Galerne.
  • 1800 Removal of the districts, Savenay becomes Sous-préfecture.
  • 1814 : after abdication of Napoleon and during the Hundred Days the city remains faithful to monarchy.
  • 1868 : the city loses the statute of sub-prefecture to the profit of Saint-Nazaire.
  • 1936 : Meeting of the Popular front with 40  000 people.
  • First World War: The city lodges a hospital complex American.
  • Second world war: The city lodges a prison camp.

Administration

Savenay belongs to the Community of communes the Loire & Sillon, founded on January 1st 2002. This one intervenes in the fields of the Urbanisme, of the Tourisme, the Déchet S, the sport and school transport, the Logement, employment and the Economic development.

Other communal competences are managed directly by the Mairie.

Economy

The city is a center of rural activity important. Approximately 40% of the inhabitants of the canton works in this same canton, a good part of the companies being localized with Savenay.

It is at the same time a center of specifically rural services (agriculture, trade of proximity) but also of intermediate services (supermarkets, shipping companies, craftsmen).

The remainder of the inhabitants are migrants, working either in the area of Saint-Nazaire, or in that of Nantes.

Money , with the sinople rafter confined of three clover of same; with the chief of mouths charged with a coupled hermine to the naturalness of the floating jumper of Brittany. With the edge of azure charged with ten gold besants.

The external ornaments which accompanied the ecu (red Coat of Saint Martin's day, owner of the parish, and crowns of Viscount) are not used any more.

  • the rafter and the clover green evoke the Bonnier family.
  • the money field symbolizes the richness of the commune.
  • the hermine recalls the membership to Brittany.
