Savannakhet

Savannakhet is at the same time a city and a province of the Laos. For the province, to see Province of Savannakhet. ---- Savannakhet (16°33 NR; 104°45 E), ສະຫວັນນະເຂດ, officially known under the name Muong Khantabouli (also called Muong Savan ), are the second city of the Laos by its population, with approximately 124.000 inhabitants, and the chief town of the province of the same name, including/understanding 15 districts, most populated Laos with 824.662 inhabitants (census of March 1st 2005).

Built in 1894 by the French, it is a very active economic center south Laos, important point of passage to the outlet of the driving road axis with Da Nang and vis-a-vis the Thailand.

Like all the cities of Laos, the population of Savannakhet is composed of Laos, Thais, Vietnameses and Chinese as well as many representatives of the various minorities present at Laos.

One finds there an important temple Buddhist dating from XVe century, the Wat Sainyaphum , a Chinese temple, a Catholic church and a mosque. Savannakhet also has a small Museum of the dinosaurs, built with the assistance of national Muséum of natural history of Paris.

A bridge connecting Savannakhet to Mukdahan in Thailand was built in 2006. This project falls under the great East-West transverse way of Rangoon to Ho Chi Minh Ville. It was built with a financing international and named the “Bridge of Friendship 2”, in reference to the “Pont of the friendship lao-inhabitant of Thailand” connecting Vientiane and Nong Khai.
