History

Sauxillanges is located in a valley, with the foot D E the hillock of Usson which is one of the four keys of Auvergne (also called four doors) with Vodable, Ybois and Nonette. The priory of Sauxillanges was founded, in the shape of an abbey, by the duke Acfred of Aquitaine into 928. It depends on the Benedictine abbey of Cluny (created into 909). Its first abbot was certain Odo or Odon. It had, upon the departure, a striking down expansion since it accommodates more than eighty monks permanently. In 1062, it is reduced in priory by the abbot of Cluny, Hugues de Semur. Worthy Pierre the, born one in Montboissier in 1094, will make his studies there before adorning the habit in 1109, and becoming claustral prior of Vézelay then prior of Domène in Isere and then abbot of Cluny which it directed until his death in 1156. The great names of Armorial will be priors commendataires of Sauxillanges: Rochefoucauld in the years 1620, the cardinal Raynaud d' Este in 1656, Charles-François de Goüé, François-Constantin of the Tower of Auvergne, a famous theologist, Louis de Murat and prince Louis-Rene de Rohan-Guéméné who will be the last prior of 1745 (it is eleven years old) with the Revolution. This last will never come there! The abbey of Sauxillanges is one of the five large priories of Cluny with Souvigny, the Charity-on-Loire, Saint-Martin-of-Fields in Paris and Lewes in England. In 1789 the immense monastery will be destroyed and the goods of the Church will be sold to private individuals until 1793. Today, there remain several buildings and of the interesting vestiges: The very beautiful Gothic vault of the priors, the vault Our-Lady-of-Wood, which is in the course of restoration, with five superb keystones which are allotted respectively to the Bourbons (weapons of France: " of azure with three flowers of lys"), in Jacques d' Amboise (" blade of gold and gueules"), in Johannes of Laurents prior at the time of the construction of the vault (" star with six branches under a lambel with three hanging in chef"), in Carolus de Bourbon 73ème prior (" of azure with three flowers of gold lily to the stick of gueules") and in Cluny (" a sword and two keys croisées"). Half of the cloister and the refectory of the monks who were restored in the years 1970 and some beautiful vestiges which are included in particular dwellings, buildings, cellars or gardens.
