Goxwiller is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

Geography

Goxwiller is presented in the form of a village-street, in contact with the agricultural plain and of wine Piedmont. Traditional artisanal activities (joinery, sabot-maker, tannery, binding,…) and the vine growing made its reputation.

History

Since the oldest times, Goxwiller and the common neighbor of Bourgheim formed a legal and religious entity: on the blazon, the two joined together circles symbolize this old union.

A " Villa veterana" is at the origin of the village located on the old Roman way of Piedmont. Mentioned first once in 920 (Getenesvillare then Gokesvilre, Gotesviller and finally Goxwiller), the village is a pledged good with several abbeys, of which that of Niedermunster, until in 1522. Like the Seigniory of Barr of which it forms part, the village was placed under the suzerainty of the Town of Strasbourg until the Révolution. After many wars and successive destruction, Goxwiller benefits from the rise of the Viticulture at the 19th century.
