Saurischia
The saurischiens (of the Greek Saurischia meaning “thigh of lizard”) are one of both large orders of Dinosaure S. All the carnivorous dinosaurs were saurischiens.
The differences between the saurischiens and the Ornithischien S, the other great group of dinosaurs, are mainly noted on the level of the basin. The saurischiens, so called sauripelviens had a basin of reptile with a pubis pointing forwards whereas that of the ornithischiens was directed with the back with the manner of the birds. Other differences exist, in particular on the level of the brain-pan and the shape of the bones of the neck.
All the dinosaurs are distributed between ornithischiens and saurischiens.
The saurischiens are divided into two groups:
- the Théropode S: comprise the carnivorous bipeds, like the Tyrannosaure, and also the family of the Cœlurosaurien S which probably evolved to the current birds (see Archaeopteryx). By irony of fate, the dinosaurs with basin of lizard would be thus the ancestors of the birds.
- the Sauropodomorphe S: primarily herbivorous quadrupeds, having a long neck and a large tail, whose certain families reached considerable sizes (example: Diplodocus)
