Saurat
Saurat is a common French, located in the department of the Ariège and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is called Sauratois.
Geography
Saurat is located in a East-West valley delimited by the Col of Port (1249 meters) and the calcareous mountain of Calamès. The course of the Slabbing off-cut which culminates with 1948 meters is the top highest on the commune of Saurat . The mountain climate has influences Mediterranean and oceanic and is located about at the border of both.Geographical curiosity: the rock of Carlong, a suspended rock of round form of a diameter of ten meters, overhangs the village.
History
The valley knew at the beginning of the 20th century an industry of the stone with false impetus at the beginning by a hawker lombard (Angel Bonini). To very recently the last stone factory with forgery of Sylvain Cuminetti manufactured the stones to be sharpened natural.
Several mines were in activity on the side of Carli from where one extracted the plates from schistous sandstone (Lauze). A mill pulled by a Turbine was used to cut the stones in forms rectangular or in rhombus following the use.
