Sauldre

The Sauldre is an affluent of the Cher. It is the result of the junction of the Petite Sauldre and of the Grande Sauldre upstream of the town of Salbris and throws itself in the Cher on the level of the commune of Châtillon-sur-Cher. With its affluents, it drains the southern part of the the Sologne and the area located northern and in the North-East of the town of Bourges.

For better differentiating Large Sauldre from Small Sauldre, Large Sauldre is regarded as Sauldre.

Hydrology

Sauldre is a fairly abundant river, like the majority of the rivers of the area (Expensive, Arnon, Yèvre inter alia). Its flow was observed over one 43 years period (1964-2007), with Selles-sur-Cher, locality where its confluence with the Cher is located. The catchment area of the river is of 2  254 km ².

Interannual medium flow or module of the river in Selles-sur-Cher east of 14,9 m ³ a second.

Sauldre present of the seasonal fluctuations of flow marked enough, with high waters of winter-beginning of spring, carrying the average flow monthly on a level located between 16,8 and 32,2 m ³ a second, from December to May included (with an in February maximum), and low waters of be-beginning of autumn, energy of at the end of June at the end of October, bringing a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 3,47 m ³ to August, which remains rather high. But the fluctuations of flow can be much more important over shorter periods.

With the low water level the VCN3 can fall until 0,76 m ³, in the event of dry quinquennial period, that is to say only 760 liters a second. For recall, the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be important, characteristic divided by the majority of the affluents of the Loire. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 93 and 140 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 170 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 200 m ³, while the QIX 50 is assembled to 230 m ³ (see note).

The maximum instantaneous flow recorded in Selles-sur-Cher during this period, was of 220 m ³ a second on April 1st, 1983. By comparing this value on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising was of order cinquantennal, and thus rather exceptional.

On the whole, Sauldre is a fairly abundant river. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 210 millimetres annually, which is definitely lower than the overall average of France all confused basins, and appreciably equal to the average of the basin of the the Loire (244 millimetres). The specific Débit of the river (or Qsp) posts of this fact a solid figure: 6,6 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
