Saugues (in Occitan Saug ) is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Loire and the area Auvergne.

History
Old fortified town of the Gévaudan, it developed as of the 12th century under the authority of the bishops of Mende and the Seigneur S of Mercœur; its historical center was devastated by a Incendie in 1788.

The Brotherhood of the Penitent ones
History of the BrotherhoodIt is on May 14th, 1652, under the initiative of five honourable inhabitants of Saugues, Antoine de Langlade lord of Courère, Jacques de Langlade lord of Valette, both canons of collegial Saint Medard, Jacques de Langlade royal notary, Benoît Paparic middle-class and Antoine Pichot apothecary, was founded in Saugues, with the pleasant authorization of monseigneur de Marcillac bishop of Mende, a brotherhood of Penitent White. She was to be affiliated to the archiconfrery of Notre-Dame de Gonfalon of Rome by a bubble of November 15th of the same year. At the time of the plague of 1721, which prevails with violence in Gévaudan, the penitent ones had made the wish go in procession the Whit Monday to the pilgrimage of Notre Dame d' Estours.
The brotherhood comprises around fifty today penitent the, resulting ones from all professions.
