Saturn IB

The space Fusée Saturn IB (or Saturn 1B ) is a version improved of the launcher Saturn I, which had a second stages more powerful, S-IVB. Contrary to Saturn I, IB models it was able to place the module of order of Apollo in terrestrial orbit, which made a launcher of choice of it to test the Apollo vessel while the rocket Saturn V necessary to complete launching, was still under development. Saturn IB was used later, for the live missions Skylab and the project Apollo-Soyouz.

Launchings of this rocket proceeded with the Launch Complex 37 and 34 of Cap Canaveral (LC-37, LC-34) then to the Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) of the Space center Kennedy.

Stage S-IB

Stage S-IB is provided with eight engines intended for the missions in low Terrestrial orbit. It has nine tanks for eight H-1 engines. The tanks are arranged around the tank of a Missile Jupiter filled with LOX: 4 LOX , 4 RP-1 . The four external engines can be directed for better guiding the rocket.

Stage S-IVB

Stage S-IVB, prepared for Saturn IB, is practically identical to that which will be used on Saturn V, except notable for the adapter which makes it possible to connect it on the lower floors. It is provided with only one engine directional J-2. The tanks of this stage are connected between them ( common bulkhead ) what saves approximately 10 tons.
