Saturn I

The Saturn I was the first American rocket intended to put payloads in terrestrial orbit. Ten Saturn I were launched by NASA, before it is replaced by the Saturn IB, which included a more powerful upper floor.

History

The Saturn project started in April 1957 like a heavy project carried out by the team of Werner von Braun to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA). Von Braun proposed to use elements of the heavy missiles Redstone and Jupiter, and to assemble them to produce a new launcher of 1,5 million book-force (6.7 MN) on takeoff. He had already asked to use the rockets Redstone and Jupiter like spaciaux launchers under the name of Juno I and Juno II , and thus he asked so that are improved they to make one launcher, the Juno V .
