Sarto Baker

Sarto Fournier (East Broughton, February 15th 1908 - Ottawa, July 23rd 1980) was a politician Québécois. He was Maire Montreal of 1957 with 1960.

He was initially elected appointed district Maisonneuve-Rosemont with the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Liberal party of Canada at the time of the election of 1935. He was re-elected at the same station with four recoveries. June 12th, 1953, it is named with the Canadian Sénat by the Prime Minister Louis the St. Lawrence, becoming the youngest member of the Upper House of the Canadian Parliament.

After two unfruitful attempts in 1950 and 1954, Fournier is elected with the town hall of Montreal in 1957, by a majority of hardly: 4000 votes. The support of Maurice Duplessis, which saw in Jean Drapeau a potential adversary, is a determining factor of its victory. On the other hand, its dealings with the Prime Minister for the National union will be worth to him to be excluded from the liberal Fédération of Quebec in 1958.

It had a poor reign, similar to that of Fernand Rinfret, a man whom it cotoyé and whom it admired. The Fournier mayor omits to act by fear of the opposition and account few achievements with his credit. On the other hand, it subjected the candidature of Montreal in order to accommodate the World Fair of 1967. It finishes behind Moscow, but the International office of the exposures entrusts the organization of the Expo 67 to the Québécois metropolis, after the desistance from the Soviet capital , two weeks after the election of 1962.

It was demolishes again by Jean Drapeau at the time of the municipal elections of 1960 and 1962. It turns over to the Senate of Canada, where it will finish its days at the 72 years age.
