History

Objects of the Bronze Age, more precisely of the times subappenninic and protovillanovienne, were discovered on the territory of the commune, in particular in the grotta dell' Orso (cave of the Bear). But the true development of the territory of Sarteano is at, when the small villages of the age of the Iron, which one knows only the necropoles (Sferracavalli, Albinaio, Casolimpio), formed true urban centres. It is of this period which the many discoveries carried out in the necropolis go back to Solaia, from which come from many vases of bucchero and some ceramics attics with black figures. Between and it one notes a flourishing development of the necropoles located at the east of Sarteano; in particular the many hypogean ones put at the day in the locality known as the Tombe testify to the presence of rich person families of the land class. At the time Roman, the territory of Sarteano was the seat many production centres and of some villas of Masters of which remain of the imposing vestiges in Peschiera Giannini.

The presence more far from one snake with three heads provided with peaks and barbs still underlines the world of beyond. The hypogean one which shelters this tomb is dug in travertine, to 5 m of depth. The entry itself is preceded a length Dromos 20 m length.
