The Sart-Tilman is a village and a hill located at the south of the town of Liege, between the valleys of the Ourthe and the Meuse. The hill is divided between the communal territories of the towns of Liege, and Seraing for the district of the Cense red . The place belonged to the territory of the commune of Angleur until the fusion of the communes of 1977.

The place is known to be the principal establishment of the Université of Liege as well as scientific park centered on biotechnologies and space industry. This Campus with the characteristic - which distinguishes it from the campuses to Anglo-Saxon - to be dispersed in full nature, in wooded areas, the buildings constituting a crown around a deeply indented valley. A great number of the buildings constitute p! èces important for the history of the contemporary architecture. It is in particular the case of the university hospital, which one owes with Charles Vandenhove.

The hill is primarily wooded. It accommodates however also the moor of Streupa and the Château of Colonster, with the park of this last, and a botanical garden. An important part of these spaces has the statute of natural reserve. The University of Liege thus contributed to maintain a lung green of a surface important to the accesses of the agglomeration of Liege.

The hill is assembled during Liege-Bastogne-Liege ( Côte of Sart-Tilman ). The rise is generally done starting from Tilff in the valley of Ourthe, and the descent towards Sclessin in the valley of the Meuse.

Etymology

Sart refers to a place where the Essartage was practiced, activity concistant to cut trees regularly so that those provide small branches which could constitute faggots.

Tilman is a family name of the area.
